We went to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau during our trip to the Big Island last week. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau is also known as "Place of Refuge", and it was a safe haven for those who had broken a law, or had been defeated in a battle. If you could get to the Place of Refuge before your pursuers caught you and killed you, it was all OK. Kind of like "Olly olly oxen free" for ancient Hawaii.
