I'm going to preface this entry with a statement of the obvious. This post will contain bad words. I use bad words a lot. If you haven't heard me use them, it's because I try not to use them when I'm around you. But I think you know that I use them when you're not around. I'm just that kind of person. It doesn't mean anything bad about you or me*, it just means I think you don't like bad words, or that the setting I usually see you in is not appropriate for bad words. It's not really a problem to not use them around you either. I can take them or leave them.
OK, so I was poking around on iTunes recently and found a song by Warren Zevon called "My Shit is Fucked Up".
It's a useful all purpose statement - "My Shit is Fucked Up". It's one I use often. When your computer is not working, and you aren't really sure what is going on, your shit is fucked up. If if was just a case of your mouse not working correctly, or maybe a certain application being slow to load, you would just state the exact problem - "My mouse isn't working."
But if nothing is working right, and trying to open an email message results in an empty white window and the hourglass won't go away, then, your shit is fucked up.
Or maybe you don't really feel it's important to get into particulars. Let's say you're making an annoyed face at your computer, it's not working right, and someone asks "Hey, what's wrong?" You shrug and say "Eh, my shit is fucked up."
In the unfortunate case of Warren Zevon, it wasn't his computer, but his body. He wrote "My Shit is Fucked Up" after visiting the doctor and finding out that he had advanced lung cancer, and he died in 2003.
I read somewhere that shortly before his death, he appeared on David Letterman - he was the sole guest for the entire hour. (He had a long standing connection as a guest bandleader on the show.) He said, during that appearance "I may have made a tactical error in not going to the doctor for 20 years."
I went to the doctor
I said I'm feeling kinda rough. -
Let me break it to you son,
your shit's fucked up.
I said my shit's fucked up?
Well I don't see how,
He said the shit that used to work
won't work now.
*Some would argue that the fact that I use a lot of bad words DOES say something bad about me. But in general, I am a good person. I recycle, I drive a hybrid vehicle. I'm nice to animals. That's got to count for something, hmm?
